Introduction to Kicad – open source schematic editor
Kicad is an open source software which is used for creation of electronic schematic diagrams and printed circuit board artwork. Kicad is by default available Elecronic labratory version of Fedora.
If you have installed Ubuntu or Fedora you can download and install it
on your PC,however if you are using it on windows “.exe” file is
availale which can be downloaed for free.
Kicad generally comes as a package of four sofwares,a short description of each tool is provided under,
Eeschema :The functions required for drawing, control, layout, library management and access to the PCB design software can be carried out from within Eeschema. It is a integrated software
Pcbnew :A tool used for editing the Printed Circuit Board. If you are unable to solve designing your PAB ,this tool will surely help you to get access to design the PCB in every convinient way.
Gerbview :It is the tool that enables you to view, print.
Cvpcb :A footprint selector for components used in the circuit design.
Compared to the other free software alternatives, KiCad efficiently handles all stages with same interface:
KiCad is cross-platform, written with WxWidgets to run on FreeBSD, Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.
Libraries for almost all the components are availble. Multiple languages are supported, such as English, Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, German, and Russian. It also provides you with a option of viewing the pcb in 3-dimension.
One thing is to be noted is that Kicad is no way a electronic simulation tool.It is a basic schematic editor.
